Emelie Brändström is my name, and I am totally addicted to Bettas in all their forms and colours! The whole thing started one day about 3,5 years ago when i was going to the petstore just to "look" and I found this awesome halfmoon plakat betta. (i didnt know at that time what form or colour it was, but i had been studying fishkeeping along time and knew that this was something different and more rare to come by. ) It was the fish at the picture to the left! I bought him and a hmpk female that was sold with him as a pair and took them home and started immediatly to take pictures of them and posted on forums asking what type of betta it was. I found some betta sites and read almost everything i could come by. There wasnt that many of us bettabreeders then but i got in contact with a girl named Linda Zetterqvist and she told me she had bred some black dragons HM that would match my male. so I bought a female from her. made my first spawn and from that day on i have been crazy bettaaddicted! :D
I learned much on that first spawn. The female i bought was rosetail, but in my eyes she was gorgeous! Most of my fry became rosetail as well so i didnt continue that line. But it was nice in that way that i learned from it. what not to look for!
after around my 4th spawn i came in contact with a truly great breeder in the Netherlands, his name is Joep van Esch. He has taught me alot, and the finding of the forum www.bettas4all.nl changed the quality of my breeding alot!! since there is almost answers to everything you can wonder about bettas. I can now say that i probably have read every page on that forum haha! Me and Joep have kept in touch and talked alot about our goals and bettas etc and as i said he has taught me alot! :)
The bettas fascinate me because you can work on not only to the perfect form! but also you can choose which colour you like and work with that beside of the form of the betta, just because there are sooooo many different versions and color-variations out there! The one colour that i started with that I am stuck with til today is the Yellow blue dragon! (I soon realised that yellow is not the easiest colour to work on for a beginner xD ) It took me a whilte to get good coloured yellow blue dragons! but now I am there! and i am going to keep perfecting that coloured fish. But for me Ofcourse the form is more important, and i always choose my breeding fish, form before colour! But i dont want to go simply on form either. Why make it simple? ;) There is soo much to learn out there about bettas and just about their genetics alone! So it does not stop to fascinate me! :)
At the moment i am working on three different lines.
1. My yellow blue dragons HM
2. a try to develope a light purple betta that is as close purple as it can be. HM
3. A Koi coloured HM line
I have come the furthest with my yellow blue dragons and they are best in colour and form so far, in my opinion. But my purples start to become pretty nice aswell :) The koi spawn is a new project and we will see if it is something i will continue on or not :)
My goals with my bettabreeding is to open up the Swedish eyes to bettas with different forms and colours then just the red and blue veiltails in the stores. And i will also try to develope a betta as close to the bettas4all standard as i can. I have as a goal to go to The Holland bettashow every year and show my fish there to see how i am doing with my breeding compared to other good European breeders! And its a nice goal to have, when i return i have a year to improve to next time. I hope i maybe can travel to other shows aswell next year. But Holland Bettashow is a must! :)
